Local Cycling Legends: Theresa & Emilie

We've been celebrating International Women’s Day all week with workshops and rides for the women in our community. We feel lucky to get to know so many female riders from such distinctive backgrounds through SALA. Keep an eye on our Instagram over the next week to read more of their stories, and DM us if you would like to appear in the series!

Theresa and Emilie, featured below, are two multifaceted women who have integrated cycling into the very fabric of their lives. In a sport often dominated by men, it’s always inspiring to get to know some of the women finding joy and empowerment on two wheels. We are honored that they would take the time to share a little more about themselves here.

Theresa, who has been joining SALA rides since our first season, brings an electric energy to the table. The faster the pace, the bigger the smile on her face. Through it all, she remains warm, humble, and helpful to the group around her.

When she’s not at SALA, Theresa cycles solo or with friends, visits local saunas, and leads powerful breathwork sessions that can completely transform one's mental and physical state. With techniques that go above and beyond meditation, she helps people access the kind of endorphin high typically only reached through extreme physical exertion.

-What’s the most challenging aspect of cycling for you?
The hardest part for me is finding the balance between pushing my limits and staying kind to my body—especially on long climbs where your mind wants to go faster but your legs can't keep up. Also, it has been a process to embrace the mindset of riding for pure joy and freedom instead of performance or proving something.

-What part of cycling brings you the most joy?
Cycling gives me this deep feeling of freedom and independence. It’s the most beautiful way for me to explore landscapes and it connects me with people in such an easy, natural way, both on and off the bike. I never want to lose this connection again.

Emilie joined her first SALA ride in the summer of 2025, and immediately seemed to belong. Equally comfortable leading or following in the peloton, she has an infectiously relaxed, friendly presence.

Originally from Australia, Emilie has been working in Europe for some time as an Osteopath for professional cyclists. This means she travels to races and team camps with EF Education-EasyPost and EF Education-Oatly and keeps racers in shape as well as preventing and managing injuries in order to optimize their performance. She feels lucky to do what she does, and we think it’s fascinating as well!

-What’s the most challenging aspect of cycling for you?
The most challenging part of cycling to me is mostly when I’m not in the shape I want to be in and feel like I’m limiting my own self. I know I have capacity to go for hours on end and when my fitness doesn’t reflect that I find it hard to not be frustrated with my legs and lungs.

-What part of cycling brings you the most joy?
Mostly being outside and seeing new places. My favourite rides I’ve ever done are typically the hardest ones in terms of distance and elevation. Seeing what I’m capable of, meeting new people and being outside for hours on end brings me the most joy.
