Tips and Tricks: How to Adjust a Bike Seat Post

Sometimes the things that seem the simplest can actually involve quite a few steps. Here’s how to adjust your carbon seat post like a pro:

Before we start: Finding the best height for your saddle (not to mention angle and distance from the handlebar) can be quite complex and we recommend a bike fitting for anyone spending long, regular hours on the bike.

For temporary fixes, find your height by setting the saddle to around hip-height and take it for a little test ride, adjusting until your leg is almost completely extended when the pedal is at its lowest point.

Once you know your measurements, record, mark, or measure the height on the post.

Remove the seat post completely and clean it well. For carbon fiber posts, spread a thin layer of carbon gripper paste up to your recorded level.

After applying the paste, return the post to its place and tighten the screw, but not too much. We recommend using a torque wrench to avoid stripping the screw. Some bikes will have a little sticker near the screw saying what torque to tighten it to, but a good rule of thumb is to use setting 5-6.

Now wipe off any residual gripper paste with a rag or paper towel and you’re good to go!
